Application Procedures

SDFD accepts volunteer applications throughout the year. Applicants are screened for their assigned role through a background check and oral interview. Firefighter applicants complete a physical abilities evaluation based on job duties. Medical clearance and driving-history checks may be required for the assigned duties.

Accepted firefighting applicants complete a 12-month probationary period. The Fire Chief may extend that period. Firefighting applicant requirements from the District’s application include a high school diploma, U.S. citizenship, a valid Arizona driver’s license, and proof of insurance for a personal vehicle used for District purposes. The recruitment team will discuss the requirements applicable to your requested role.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers are generally expected to live within 15 minutes of the station; the Fire Chief may grant a waiver.

Training and Commitment

• Attend at least 20 of the 26 scheduled training sessions each year.
• Every-other-Saturday activities run from 7:00 AM to noon: station chores from 7:00–9:00 AM and training from 9:00 AM–noon.
• Members living outside the area commit at least 24 hours per month, including training time.
• Respond to calls and participate in District activities when available and as appropriate to your assigned role.
• Firefighting and EMS members obtain the required EMT or Firefighter I/II certification within 18 months of joining, based on their assigned role.
• Community support members receive training appropriate to their duties and are not required to obtain EMT or Firefighter I/II certification.

Applicant’s Statements

I release SDFD, law enforcement agencies, schools, references, and others from any and all liability concerning the release of information regarding my medical, driving, and criminal background.

I understand that impairment by alcohol and/or drugs is prohibited during any response and that the use of alcohol or drugs is prohibited when responding to an SDFD call.

I understand that unsatisfactory results of criminal-history or driving-history checks may result in termination at any time. Unsatisfactory results include, but are not limited to, felony convictions, multiple misdemeanors, DUI/DWI/DUD, and multiple or severe traffic convictions.

Statement of Vehicle Insurance

Any member who drives a personally owned vehicle for District purposes, including responding to calls or attending training, must maintain insurance and comply with applicable vehicle and traffic regulations. Members may be asked to provide proof of insurance to the Fire Chief.

I verify that any personally owned vehicle I drive for SDFD purposes will be insured in accordance with Arizona law and that I will retain that insurance while using the vehicle for District purposes.

Driver and Criminal Background Authorization

I agree to and give permission for the SDFD Fire Chief to perform driver’s license and criminal background checks annually. The information will become part of my personnel file and will be treated as confidential.

This release is given with full knowledge and understanding that SDFD will use this information only in regard to my service with the District.

I release SDFD, its officers, agents, and employees from any and all liability for damages of whatever kind or nature that may result from compliance or an attempt to comply with this authorization.

Acknowledgment of Risks

I understand the personal risks associated with firefighting and emergency medical/rescue services. I understand that firefighting is inherently dangerous. I knowingly and voluntarily assume the risks attendant to the firefighting services I perform.

Agreement to Return Equipment and Gear

I agree to return to Saint David Fire District all equipment and gear issued or loaned to me upon termination of my membership or when leaving the District. I knowingly and voluntarily take responsibility for the decline in value of equipment and gear beyond ordinary wear and tear. I assume responsibility for paying the full replacement cost of issued equipment or gear if I fail to return it.
